This condition tends to be more prevalent during warmer weather or among individuals who exercise frequently, as both scenarios can exacerbate the factors contributing to fungal acne.
If you’re battling stubborn breakouts that don’t respond to traditional acne treatments like benzoyl peroxide or typical antibiotics, the culprit might not be bacteria—it could be a fungus! Often mistaken for common acne, this condition is known as Fungal Acne, or more accurately, Malassezia Folliculitis (also called Pityrosporum Folliculitis).
Understanding this difference is the crucial first step to finally clearing your skin.
This condition tends to be more prevalent during warmer weather or among individuals who exercise frequently, as both scenarios exacerbate the factors contributing to fungal acne.
What Exactly is Malassezia Folliculitis?
Unlike Acne Vulgaris (common acne), which is caused by a buildup of oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria in the hair follicle, Fungal Acne is an infection caused by an overgrowth of a specific type of yeast called Malassezia.
This yeast is a normal part of your skin’s microbiome. However, when the conditions are just right—or rather, just wrong—the yeast multiplies out of control, invades the hair follicles, and causes inflammation that looks like a breakout.
Trigger: Causes of Overgrowth
Malassezia yeast feeds on lipids (oils and fatty acids) and thrives in hot, moist environments. Triggers that lead to an overgrowth include:
Hot, Humid Climates & Sweat: Excessive sweating or living in a hot, humid environment creates a perfect breeding ground.
Occlusive Skincare Products: Products containing ingredients the yeast feeds on, like certain fatty acids, oils, and esters (which often end in “-ate,” like isopropyl palmitate).
Antibiotics: Long-term or frequent use of oral or topical antibiotics can disrupt the balance of your skin’s natural flora, allowing the Malassezia yeast to take over.
Wearing Tight/Sweaty Clothes: Clothing that traps heat and moisture against the skin for extended periods (like workout gear).
Weakened Immune System: Conditions or medications (like oral steroids) that suppress the immune system.
Disclaimer
Fungal acne is often misdiagnosed. If you suspect you have Malassezia Folliculitis, or if your breakouts do not clear up with over-the-counter treatments, it is essential to see a board-certified dermatologist for a proper diagnosis and the most effective prescription treatment plan.
